How Tipping Works Around the World
Tipping customs vary dramatically by country, and knowing the norms matters if you're traveling:

Always check your bill first. Many restaurants automatically add a service charge (usually 10–15%). If they do, tipping on top double-tips your server. Look for lines labeled "service charge," "gratuity," or "serviço."
What Percentage Should You Tip?
Tipping percentages aren't just social convention — they're meant to reflect the quality of service:
15% — Standard / Acceptable Service was correct but unremarkable. Your order arrived as expected, your drinks were refilled, nothing went wrong. This is the baseline in most tipping cultures.
18% — Good Service The server was attentive, friendly, and got everything right. This is what most people default to.
20% — Great Service Your server went above the baseline — remembered a preference, handled a problem gracefully, made the meal noticeably better. This is the most common "generous but not excessive" tip in North America.
25%+ — Exceptional Reserved for genuinely standout service, a special occasion, or a server who handled a difficult situation with grace.
10% or less — Service Was Poor If service was genuinely bad (not because the kitchen was backed up — that's not the server's fault), a reduced tip communicates dissatisfaction. Leaving no tip at all in tipping cultures is generally reserved for genuinely unacceptable experiences.
Splitting the Bill: Equal vs. Proportional
Equal split — divide the total by the number of people. Works when everyone ordered roughly the same amount and doesn't mind minor differences.
Proportional split (pay for what you ordered) — each person pays for their items plus their share of the tip. Our calculator supports this with individual item entry. This avoids the resentment of someone who ordered a side salad subsidizing someone else's steak.
One person pays, others Venmo/PayPal — increasingly common. Calculate the total per person, and the organizer pays the restaurant while others transfer.
Rounding: The Practical Part
Nobody wants to transfer $23.47. Our calculator offers rounding options:
Round up per person — each person pays slightly more, any extra goes to a larger tip. The server benefits.
Round to nearest dollar — some people pay slightly more, some slightly less, and the total stays closest to the actual amount.
Round the tip to a clean number — adjust the tip slightly (e.g., from 18% to 19.2%) so the per-person amount comes out to a round number.
Choose whichever creates the smoothest transaction among your group.
Quick Mental Math Tricks
When you don't have your phone:
The 10% method: Move the decimal one place left. $67.50 → $6.75 is 10%. Double it for 20% ($13.50). Add half for 15% ($10.13).
The 2x sales tax method: In regions with ~8% sales tax, double the tax line on your receipt for a roughly 16% tip.
Round up the bill first: If the bill is $73.20, round to $75 in your head, then calculate your percentage on that — the round number is easier and the tip ends up slightly larger.
When the Tip Is Already Included
Look for these phrases on the bill indicating gratuity is already included:
- "Service charge: X%"
- "Gratuity included"
- "Serviço incluso" (Brazil/Portugal)
- "Service compris" (France)
- "Servizio incluso" (Italy)
If it's included, you don't need to tip again — though leaving a small amount of cash for exceptional service is always appreciated.
